Black Legged Tick Information

The scientific name for the Black-Legged tick is called Borrelia burgdorferi.

How ticks attach themselves:

They attach to a part of the human body but are often found in hard to see places such as the back, under the arms, groin, etc.

The tick will puncture the skin and continue to bury itself into the skin with its hooks.

A tick does not jump or fly onto its host. It will most likely be found in shrubs on the tips of grasses with their front legs waving in the air, waiting for a host to walk by where they can reach their legs out, and attach themselves onto the host, and find a spot where they can bury themselves.

When a tick attaches itself, you will not likely feel it. This is because after the tick is attached it secretly inserts small amounts of saliva. The saliva has anesthetic properties that make it hard for anyone to feel the actual tick embedding its glands into our skin.

The Lyme Disease is transmitted by Black-Legged ticks, but not every Black-legged tick has Lyme Disease. They attach themselves to a host, and if not found between 36-48 hours, the disease has likely been transmitted. It may take some time to realize that you are coming down with something. Symptoms of fatigue and drowsiness are signs, if you have these, go to the doctor. There is a cure that doctors can prescribe to patients if Lyme Disease is present. If you happen to find the tick embedded in your body, do not kill it.  Take it to the doctor’s office so that the doctor can tell you what antibiotics you should take.

Lyme Disease cannot be transmitted by human contact, animals, or through sexual transmissions. To be infected with Lyme Disease, an actual Black-Legged tick must have embedded itself into your skin. Also, you cannot obtain Lyme Disease through meats such as venison, or other meats. Just remember to cook meats thoroughly so as to not get food poisoning.
